BIRDING IN RUNDE

SOME PUFFINS AND MORE
This morning Leon forgot to wake us. Half past 8!!!! That’s almost two hours later then his normal wake up call!

It’s sunny outside.

According to our GPS we have 200km to go and we should do it in over 4h. That’s pretty slow is our first thought. Apparently the GPS is right. Two ferries, roadworks and hairpin bends make us do it in 6! 🙂

At 4pm we arrive at the camping of Runde. Friendly people at this beautifully placed campsite. Right at sea!

We get a place in the grass, especially for Leon. Sanne enjoys the weather, Leon plays and I work on some photos. Not easy in the harsh light of the burning sun.

Chilling
Purple has to go on blue, I'll tell how it's done!
After dinner it’s time for me to get to the bird cliff. Runde has one of the biggest cliff bird colonies of Southern Norway. Plan is to make some puffin images and maybe more. White tailed eagles are seen regularly and the Skua is breeding in the grass.

Half past 8 and I’m on my way up. A climb of 2-300m. Pretty steep, but since we did Kjerag, nothing is really steep anymore. After a good 20’ I arrive at the cliff. A lot of people here! And not such a big cliff either. I’ve been on Latrabjarg (Iceland) a couple of times. That’s something completely else.
We have to wait for the sun to set before the puffins will come to the nest so I have some time to kill. I take some landscape pictures and all of a sudden I sea a very large bird gliding over the water. Very cool to see a white tailed eagle (aka “the flying door” – it’s dimensions are alike) from so close. Shoot some pictures and we wait again.

After some time the puffins are coming. I try a couple of flight shots because I was sure I wasn’t going to beat the photos I made at Latrabjarg. This cliff is too small and there are too many people.

On my way back to the van, I see a Skua sitting next to the walking path. Time for some close ups!!

It’s almost midnight, I take a beer, enjoy the view and hup, into bed!

The next couple of days we’ll be driving up North, so we can get to the Lofoten as fast as we can! Not much will happen here. 😉
