my goal is always to return home with an image
that is more than just a snapshot

I’m Sam Mannaerts, a Belgian nature photographer who’s passionate about capturing the beauty and emotion in the world around us.
What I shoot doesn’t matter as much as the experience itself — whether it’s a dramatic arctic landscape, a curious insect, or wildlife in its natural habitat. My goal is always to return home with an image that is more than just a snapshot.

I’m self-taught, constantly exploring new techniques and perspectives, from classic landscape and wildlife photography to aerial views with a drone.

BIO

Based in Belgium, Sam Mannaerts (b. 1986) is a nature photographer and emergency nurse whose life is defined by a striking contrast between the adrenaline of the ER and the profound silence of the wilderness.
This duality flows through his work, where photography serves as both a creative outlet and a meditative escape, allowing him to translate the intensity of his daily life into images of quiet wonder.

Sam’s photographic style is characterized by a constant search for atmosphere, light, and minimalism. Rather than simply documenting a subject, he strives to capture the ‘soul’ of a landscape or an animal, prioritizing emotion and storytelling.
This vision is most evident in his work from the High North, where he seeks out the raw, cold beauty of Scandinavia, but his heart remains equally connected to his local patch. He finds endless inspiration in the polders of Kruibeke, where he documents the shifting seasons and the subtle beauty of the Belgian landscape and it’s inhabitants.
Whether he is using a traditional camera or a drone, Sam often explores abstract perspectives, transforming the natural geometry of rivers, forests, and shorelines into painterly compositions.

His dedication to the craft has earned him international acclaim across the industry’s most prestigious stages. Sam has won several prizes in the Nature Photographer of the Year (NPOTY) competition and has seen his work awarded in renowned contests such as Asferico, National Geographic, Lowland, and De Groene Camera,…

Beyond his own portfolio, he is a passionate educator and storyteller, sharing his expertise through photography workshops and as an occasional contributor to both Natuurfotografie Magazine (NL) and Landschap Magazine (B).

Through his lens, Sam invites the viewer to slow down and experience the natural world—both far abroad and close to home—in its most authentic and breathtaking form.
